Partout, sa disparition est act\u00e9e et il n\u2019est question que de fermer des centrales \u00e9lectriques polluantes et de leur remplacement par d\u2019autres \u00e9nergies renouvelables et propres.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Et pourtant\u2026 le charbon n\u2019est pas encore tout \u00e0 fait \u00ab\u00a0historique et pittoresque\u00a0\u00bb, enterr\u00e9 comme des terrils du nord de la France class\u00e9s au patrimoine mondial par l\u2019Unesco d\u00e8s 2012. Le charbon n\u2019est pas mort \u2013 loin s\u2019en faut \u2013 et il agite m\u00eame les march\u00e9s de l\u2019\u00e9nergie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5581 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cours_du_charbon_year_ahead_US_central-300x131.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cours_du_charbon_year_ahead_US_central-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cours_du_charbon_year_ahead_US_central-1024x449.png 1024w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cours_du_charbon_year_ahead_US_central-768x337.png 768w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cours_du_charbon_year_ahead_US_central.png 1189w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le prix du charbon ne cesse en effet de grimper, atteignant m\u00eame son plus haut niveau jamais observ\u00e9 depuis pr\u00e8s de 6 ans. A contre-courant de l\u2019\u00e9volution du mix combustible et des d\u00e9clarations d\u2019intentions \u00e9cologiques, le prix du charbon progresse donc, et, alli\u00e9 \u00e0 un prix de carbone en hausse, le dark spread \u00e9tend son empire sur les march\u00e9s\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><u>D\u2019une sortie difficile<\/u><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> \u2026<\/span><u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le 20 avril 2017, la presse titrait sur une journ\u00e9e sans charbon dans le mix \u00e9lectrique au Royaume Uni, une premi\u00e8re en 135 ann\u00e9es. Avant l\u2019application de nouvelles normes environnementales europ\u00e9ennes de 2021, et face \u00e0 la hausse du co\u00fbt du carbone et la baisse des co\u00fbts des \u00e9nergies renouvelables, les producteurs d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 se d\u00e9sengagent du charbon. Mais le plus surprenant est que les compagnies mini\u00e8res leur embo\u00eetent le pas\u00a0: Ainsi BHP, le g\u00e9ant anglo-australien du charbon, qui a claqu\u00e9 au printemps la porte de\u2026 l\u2019Association mondiale du Charbon\u00a0! Jugeant le lobby trop climato-sceptique, BHP a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de se d\u00e9sengager du charbon thermique. Un d\u00e9part bient\u00f4t suivi par un celui d\u2019un autre g\u00e9ant, Rio Tinto, qui arr\u00eate lui aussi le charbon thermique. On pourrait croire \u00e0 un d\u00e9samour d\u00e9finitif.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mais la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 du march\u00e9 reste diff\u00e9rente\u00a0: en Europe, les centrales \u00e0 charbon continuent de fournir le MW marginal, celui qui fixe le prix de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Le prix de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 y reste fortement corr\u00e9l\u00e9 \u00e0 celui de l\u2019API#2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5619 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/mix_electrique_sources_production_par_region_en_2017-300x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"286\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/mix_electrique_sources_production_par_region_en_2017-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/mix_electrique_sources_production_par_region_en_2017-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/mix_electrique_sources_production_par_region_en_2017-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/mix_electrique_sources_production_par_region_en_2017.png 1200w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 572px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 572\/286;\" \/>Si, d&rsquo;ici 2030, les op\u00e9rateurs de centrales \u00e0 charbon europ\u00e9ennes pourraient perdre 22 milliards d&rsquo;euros en Europe selon Carbon Tracker (les op\u00e9rateurs allemands encaissant le tiers de ces pertes, 7 milliards et les Polonais 3 milliards), seuls sept pays de l&rsquo;Union europ\u00e9enne ont pr\u00e9vu de renoncer \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 au charbon d&rsquo;ici 2030 (le Royaume-Uni, la France, l&rsquo;Italie, les Pays-Bas, le Danemark, la Finlande et le Portugal), soit \u00e0 peine 27% des centrales charbon. La Pologne s&rsquo;y refuse, de m\u00eame que l&rsquo;Espagne qui a vers\u00e9 400 millions d&rsquo;euros pour que ses centrales \u00e0 charbon s&rsquo;\u00e9quipent de filtres (consid\u00e9r\u00e9s par la Commission Europ\u00e9enne comme un avantage concurrentiel d\u00e9loyal).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">M\u00eame en Allemagne, qui doit d&rsquo;urgence sortir du charbon si elle veut tenir son engagement de baisser de 40% ses \u00e9missions de CO<sub>2<\/sub> d&rsquo;ici \u00e0 2020, le charbon et le lignite fournissent encore 36% de la production \u00e9lectrique du pays. La \u00ab commission charbon \u00bb planche sur cette sortie : elle doit rendre ses premi\u00e8res analyses, d\u00e8s cet automne 2018, mais elles sont d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 battues en br\u00e8che par RWE.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En Europe, le secteur semble donc encore esp\u00e9rer que quelques fermetures chez les concurrents feront remonter les prix de l&rsquo;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, et surtout compter sur le soutien des Etats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aux Etats-Unis, malgr\u00e9 la d\u00e9cision \u00e9lectoraliste de Trump de d\u00e9faire le \u00ab\u00a0Green Power Plan\u00a0\u00bb de son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur et de suspendre les limites d\u2019\u00e9mission de CO<sub>2<\/sub> f\u00e9d\u00e9rales, l\u2019exploitation de charbon ne semble pas devoir repartir pas face \u00e0 l\u2019extraction bon march\u00e9 du gaz de schistes. Pourtant les centrales charbon sont souvent, l\u00e0 aussi, celles qui fixent le prix marginal de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u2026 \u00e0 un paradoxal retour en force\u2026<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Depuis fin 2015 et la COP21 de Paris, le charbon a beau faire l\u2019objet de nombreuses critiques, voire de campagnes de d\u00e9sinvestissements de grande ampleur, et \u00eatre d\u00e9sign\u00e9 comme \u00ab l\u2019ennemi climatique n\u00b01 \u00bb, ce combustible reste toutefois de loin la principale source d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 dans le monde, comptant pour 38% de la production mondiale \u00e9lectrique, soit la m\u00eame part qu\u2019en\u2026 1998\u00a0!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C\u2019est donc d\u2019abord une reprise de la consommation d\u2019\u00e9nergie primaire qui pousse le prix du charbon \u00e0 la hausse. Une demande localis\u00e9e dans la r\u00e9gion Asie-Pacifique, qui concentre, aujourd\u2019hui, les trois quarts, de la demande mondiale, contre 50% il y a quinze ans, en raison du d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique et de la d\u00e9mographie galopante. Selon l&rsquo;AIE, l&rsquo;Agence internationale de l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie, la plan\u00e8te devrait consommer plus de 5,5 milliards de tonnes de charbon \u00e0 l&rsquo;horizon 2021. Parmi les \u00e9nergies fossiles, la mati\u00e8re noire est, en effet, la plus abondante et demeure la moins ch\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5649 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/World_coal_production_and_consumption_in_millions_tons_of_equivalent-300x174.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"357\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/World_coal_production_and_consumption_in_millions_tons_of_equivalent-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/World_coal_production_and_consumption_in_millions_tons_of_equivalent-1024x594.png 1024w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/World_coal_production_and_consumption_in_millions_tons_of_equivalent-768x446.png 768w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/World_coal_production_and_consumption_in_millions_tons_of_equivalent.png 1080w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 616px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 616\/357;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Il est d\u2019ailleurs rappel\u00e9 par BP dans sa Statistical Review of World Energy que le parc de centrales \u00e0 charbon est jeune : pr\u00e8s de la moiti\u00e9 des capacit\u00e9s \u00e9lectriques de ce parc ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 construites durant les 12 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, et de nombreuses nouvelles constructions sont encore en projet ou \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude, notamment en Asie du Sud-Est. Ces centrales pourraient ainsi \u00eatre encore en service en 2050, en l\u2019absence de politiques acc\u00e9l\u00e9rant leur fermeture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u2026 Avant un tournant de march\u00e9\u00a0?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Il y a donc eu une hausse de prix du charbon sous l\u2019impulsion de la demande, mais cette hausse s\u2019accompagne aujourd\u2019hui d\u2019un changement de paradigme sur le march\u00e9\u00a0: Depuis 2014, la production mondiale de charbon reculait, mais elle est repartie \u00e0 la hausse depuis l\u2019an dernier, et les tensions sur les stocks se sont att\u00e9nu\u00e9es.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5625 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Price_per_maturity-300x196.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"368\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Price_per_maturity-300x196.png 300w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Price_per_maturity-1024x669.png 1024w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Price_per_maturity-768x501.png 768w, https:\/\/hayaenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Price_per_maturity.png 1527w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 564px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 564\/368;\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le march\u00e9 de charbon, qui \u00e9tait depuis des ann\u00e9es caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par sa backwardation (des prix de court terme nettement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s que ceux de long terme), est en train d\u2019op\u00e9rer une correction. La tendance demeure haussi\u00e8re, mais le court terme stagne, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 les prix progressent pour les plus longues maturit\u00e9s. C\u2019est un signe fort que (i) la production a suffisamment augment\u00e9 pour s\u00e9curiser les approvisionnements de l\u2019hiver et (ii) les incertitudes sur l\u2019approvisionnement des ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir grandissent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Un changement de paradigme et une courbe de prix plus plate qui, en cas d\u2019hiver chaud et selon la politique adopt\u00e9e par la Chine, pourrait rapidement conduire \u00e0 retournement du march\u00e9 du charbon vers une situation de contango.
